Seven costly pro athlete financial screw-ups

March 12th, 2010

Almost 80 percent of National Football League players are flirting with bankruptcy two years after they retire, according to Sports Illustrated. NBA players aren’t faring much better. 60 percent of former National Basketball Association players end up broke within five years of retirement. Athletes squander millions of dollars due to bad decisions, lavish spending and poor financial planning. Here is a list of athletes that have lost their fortunes through some of the biggest financial blunders of all time.

Scottie Pippen

Known more for his on court defense than his off court business sense, former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen lost $120 million in career earnings due to poor financial planning and bad business ideas. Air Jordan’s sidekick blew $27 million on bad investments and spent $4.3 million on a Gulfstream II corporate jet.

Evander Holyfield

Four-time boxing champ Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield reportedly made over $250 million in cash during his boxing career, but despite this he reportedly is flat broke. Holyfield lost all his money by making “smart” business decisions look really foolish. You thought buying a house was a smart move? It normally is, but not when you buy a house the size of Rhode Island. Holyfield bought a $20 million house with over 54,000 square feet and 109 rooms. The house has 11 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a movie theater, a bowling alley and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Imagine how much it must cost to cut the grass on all 235 acres! You could buy a Range Rover with the electric bill payment alone.

Fifteen days after his death his album Life After Death hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, it went on to eventually sell over ten million copies! Biggie’s legacy lives on through his remaining family, fans, friends, and music.

ATLBARZ VIDEO PREMIERE: Kanye West’s “Coldest Winter”

February 25th, 2010

Kanye West is still putting out videos from 808’s and Heartbreak and the latest is a tweak of the track, “Coldest Winter.”

Featuring what looks to be grim reapers chasing the White Witch from Narnia one could assume that Kanye came back from the dead after getting chopped up in the trunk and is back for revenge. Or that he fell asleep watching Lord Of The Rings.

I never thought I’d be so eager to hear Kanye rap. Where are you Yeezy?

ATLBARZ VIDEO: L.A. Reid Jets To Belize To Get Shyne’s Contract Signed

February 25th, 2010

shyne-lareid.jpg

Chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chartered a private jet and flew to Belize yesterday to get Shyne’s signature on a multi-million dollar recording contract.

Reid spoke with Keith Swift of 7 News Belize shortly after the contract was signed:

“I am here because great people are worthy of travelling many many miles for it and I come here to say that your country is great and I hope you guys know that this is a great man from your country who deserves this kind of respect and who deserves this kind of support. So that is why we are here.”

Reid, a legendary producer in his own right, also told the media that he will be working with Shyne personally on the project, even hinting that he would be producing the project himself.

Shyne, who was released from prison last year and later deported to Belize, will record his third album in London, since he is unable to enter the United States.

“It is an honor and a pleasure, not just for me but for Belize. Chairman Reid is on the level of Berry Gordy, Clive Davis, the biggest music men in the history of music, and so to have a partnership with Gangland Records and Island/Def Jam is incredible for me.”

It’s unknown just how much Shyne’s contract is worth, as both Reid and Shyne did not comment on the matter. However, it’s rumored to be worth anywhere from $5 million to $10 million.

Shyne’s second album, Godfather Buried Alive, was released in 2004 by Def Jam while the rapper was in prison on attempted murder charges stemming from an incident at Club New York involving Jennifer Lopez and Diddy.

Here’s hoping no Def Jam staffers lose their jobs if the project doesn’t live up to Reid’s expectations!

Amber Rose Jacks Grace Jones’ Pose

February 25th, 2010

amber-grace.jpg

No idea’s original, that’s for certain. Kanye West just relaunched his blog at www.kanyewest.com and one of the first things you’ll see when you visit is a picture of his girlfriend, Amber Rose.

If her pose looks familiar to you, you’re probably over the age of 25.

She’s in the same pose as a famous Grace Jones picture from the early 80s.

So who rocked it better???

I gotta give the nod to Grace Jones who looks a bit more uhhh…. graceful in her pose.

Kudos to Amber for giving it a shot… she’s got a nice shape on her. I had no idea her thighs were like that, but I say Amber should hit up a few more yoga classes then try again.

What do you think???

And please, don’t let this turn into a light-skinned/dark-skinned debate in the comments.  It’s 2010 fercryinoutloud!!!!!!!  We off that!
